The peacock is a bird that has been believed to ward off evil spirits because of its powerful life force. The peacock is also a bird with a strong reproductive power, which means prosperity for descendants. For this reason, the peacock is one of the most commonly used patterns for wedding kimonos in Japan. It is also the national bird of India and an important animal mentioned in mythology. Its mysterious appearance has long been the subject of paintings in classical Japanese art.
